3 ways to reconnect with your body

We’re in the midst of the holiday season, and if you’re a neurodivergent babe like me, you’re probably getting overwhelmed and wanting to crawl out of your skin.

The holiday season is so busy and overstimulating that I sometimes need days to recover from activities. I often feel like my body doesn’t belong to me, and end up feeling disconnected from it.

Being disconnected from my body does NOT feel great, and I came up with some exercises to help me!

sensory friendly self-care

I am a big fan of soft, fluffy textures, and I love me a comfy cozy moment. So curling up in my room with the ac on sub-zero temps under my blanket is a top-tier way for me to just be with my body. Every ND babe has their own favourite textures, and smells — use these feel-good sensations to come back into your body.

my fave sensory-friendly self-care

self massage

Physical touch is very important to me. I love hugs, cuddles, and just random touches. When I don’t have another body to help me with that, I opt for self massage! It’s not usually a grand event — I like to use my fave scented Bath & Body Works lotion for a slow, intentional, full body rub down after a long shower.

I’ll sometimes pair this with some lofi music or nature sounds and really just focus on how my body feels as I do it. When I’m done I feel so relaxed and connected to my body again!

you might also like

  • a scalp massage while you wash your hair in the shower (10/10, love this one)
  • a face massage using a cool/cold jade roller
  • giving yourself a foot and/or leg massage using baby oil or your fave lotion/body butter

set boundaries with screens

Hey, we all doomscroll. I get it — it’s a quick hit of dopamine to a dopamine-lacking system. But I personally always feel shitty after doomscrolling and dissociating for a while, so it’s definitely not an activity that’s conducive to reconnecting with your body. I like to have at least 15mins of screen-less time a day doing literally anything else.

“But Sue-Jan, I gotta DO SOMETHING”

I know!

I personally love reading fantasy novels, or embroidering while listening to true crime documentaries to get away from screens. You can do any of the other exercises here, or you can check out my 13 ways to reconnect with your body Notion doc!

I’m thinking of creating a companion journal Notion template for this, so lemme know if that’s something you’d be interested in in the comments!
