making money tracking… actually feel good?! how I built an ADHD-friendly subscription tracker in Notion

the messy starting point

This client wanted to give their audience something useful, not throwaway — a tool that respected how ADHD brains work and how stressful money stuff can feel.

Money shouldn’t feel like a source of shame or stress. I want this to feel good, not boring or spreadsheet-y

Their goals:

  • keep it visual, functional, and aesthetic
  • avoid spreadsheet energy (cos ew)
  • help users track subscriptions before they sneak up on them
  • build it well enough that it could be given away or sold in future

They chose Notion because that’s what their people asked for — even though they were more familiar with Google Sheets. So they brought me in to build it right from the jump.

what we built + why

The final product is a one-database system with powerful views and easy UX, including:

  • linked views for:
  • active subs
  • cancelled subs
  • renewals this month & next month

  • custom database templates with fields for:
  • payment method
  • who it's shared with
  • 2FA info
  • cancellation button + cancellation reason

  • interactive guide walking users through:
  • adding a subscription
  • canceling one properly
  • setting reminders

  • designer notes page (separate from the user-facing stuff!) covering:
  • how to edit the template behind the scenes
  • how to publish it for public duplication
  • how synced blocks work — including her self plug that shows up throughout the system, guiding customers back to her services

Everything lives in one place, everything’s labeled clearly, and it’s all designed to reduce confusion + lower cognitive load.

what changed

This wasn’t just “make it pretty and call it a day.”

This was make it usable, make it sustainable, and make it feel good for the people it’s meant for.

My client was so happy with it, she had zero notes. Like... none 🤯🤯

Since the build:

  • it’s prepped to live on as a freebie, paid offer, or client add-on
  • and it shows up as a reflection of her values, not just her expertise
