new in Notion: offline mode 📴 – Notion’s most requested feature is finally here!

Yes you read that right! Notion FINALLY has offline mode!

You can now work while you’re vacationing off-grid and you’re not supposed 😂

Notion being fully online has been a gripe for me for a long time. The internet at my local coffee shop isn’t always reliable, and it’s so annoying to make a production of changing up your work environment only to not be able to work 🙄

how offline mode works

single pages only

Notion is a pretty advanced tool, so offline mode is starting off with individual pages. You won’t be able to make the subpages of a page available offline, without going into each subpage and making it offline as well

only some blocks will be available offline

Again, Notion is crazy complex, so the most common blocks are gonna be available offline. These include mainly the text blocks, bullets, tables, checkboxes, stuff like that. Offline mode also syncs databases – but only the first 50 rows

syncing works in the background

When you’re back online, Notion saves your edits automatically so nothing is lost! Even if you and your client are editing the same page

only available on the app

That includes the Notion desktop app on Windows and macOS, and the app on Android and iOS.

You can’t use offline mode on browser.

how to start working offline

  1. Update your app. Whichever device you’re using (Windows, Mac, Android or iOS), you gotta have the latest version to access offline mode
  2. Prep the pages you wanna use offline. Open the 3-dot menu on any page to toggle on <Available offline>. If you’re on a paid plan, your Recents and Top Favourites are automatically downloaded for offline adventures
  3. Literally that's all there is to it!

things to keep in mind when you’re werkin offline

You can check out your offline pages in your settings. Go to <Settings>, then <Offline> and you’ll find all the pages that are offline.

Any changes you make works offline. That includes typing, reorganizing, even creating new pages 🤯 It’ll all sync and merge perfecting when you get back to your Wi-Fi.

There are limits tho:

  • Subpages won’t be available offline unless you manually make them offline
  • You can’t make your entire workspace available offline (yet 👀)
  • No images, files, embeds, AI or any exporting are available offline – but maybe in the future? 👀
  • Offline is device specific – offline pages available on your phone won’t be available on your laptop and vice versa

are there any differences for free and paid plans?

Meme image of Oprah Winfrey in a bright red double-breasted blazer, arms spread wide in celebration, holding a microphone in one hand. She's on what looks like a talk show stage with an excited, joyful expression. White text with a dark outline reads "EVERYONE GETS UNLIMITED OFFLINE PAGES IN NOTION!!!!" across the bottom in all caps, playing on the iconic "you get a car!" Oprah moment

Seriously! Everyone gets unlimited offline pages in Notion.

The only (honestly, minor) differences between free and paid plans is that free plans have to manually make pages available offline, while paid plans get theirs synced automatically.

Paid plans also get their favourites and recents automatically synced, while free plans don’t.

Sue-Jan’s thoughts

I personally am super excited about Notion’s offline mode. Being a solopreneur means basically staying at home all the time and I wanted to make use of the library near me.

Imagine my surprise when the internet wasn’t fast enough to run Notion 💀

I literally had to scrap my whole work day and got NOTHING done. Now, I can actually go enjoy the quiet and comfort of the library and work in Notion despite the slow af Wi-Fi. And I can get out of the house more 🥹

Have you tried out Notion offline yet? Are you enjoying it? Tell what you think in the comments!
